Purple Hands, Painting, 70 x 50 x 1.5  cm, Oil and Acrylic on Canvas, 2019.

The inspiration for the painting stems from the events of October 31st, 1969. On that day, sixty members of the Gay Liberation Front (GLF) and the Society for Individual Rights (SIR) organized a protest outside the San Francisco Examiner's offices. Their demonstration was a response to a series of news articles that disparaged LGBT individuals in San Francisco's gay bars and clubs. Initially peaceful, the protest against the Examiner's "homophobic editorial policies" turned tumultuous and earned the names "Friday of the Purple Hand" and "Bloody Friday of the Purple Hand." During the protest, Examiner employees callously dumped a bag of printers' ink from the third-story window onto the crowd. Undeterred, the protesters utilized the ink to defiantly scrawl "Gay Power" and other slogans on the building walls, leaving purple handprints throughout downtown San Francisco. This protest became one of the most visible demonstrations of gay power in history.
